SHOU Leader and Delegation Visited 3 UK Universities

From November 27 to December 4, adelegation of 5 led by Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President Wang Xiping ofShanghai Ocean University (SOU), visited Oxford University, Southampton SolentUniversity and University College Dublin in England and Ireland uponinvitation. The delegation had in-depth discussions and exchanges of ideas onsuch topics as short-term student exchange and learning, development of teachers’overseas visiting bases, introduction of teachers and innovation laboratories.

During the visit at Oxford University, WangXiping and his party visited seven colleges including Regents College ofOxford, Queen's College, Trinity College, New College and Jesus College tofully understand the operation mode of Oxford University's college system.Afterwards, the delegation also visited Oxford Psychological Counseling Centerand Prof. Alan C. Percy, director of the center, introduced the structure and workmode of the center. The two sides also discussed the advantages and challengesof combining psychological counseling and career development counseling incolleges and universities. In the afternoon, the delegation had in-depthdiscussions and exchanges of ideas with Dr. Robert Ellis, Principal of the Regent'sCollege, Dr. Shidong Wang,director of the Outlook and Global Development Center, and Dr. Lynn Rboson, vicepresident of the college. Based on the framework agreement signed by OxfordUniversity and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, both sides reached aletter of intent for cooperation, solidly promoting the construction of theshort-term exchange student and full-time education team visiting bases.

Southampton Solent University, as one ofthe practice training bases of the National School of Administration, enjoys agood reputation in internship training and applied personnel training, and hasa unique mode of industrial tie-in service management in support of studentinnovation and entrepreneurship. During the visit at Southampton SolentUniversity, the delegation met and had 6 talks with Jo Nesbitt, Director of theOffice of International Exchange, Brianimir Pantaleev from Maritime Science and EngineeringCollege, Richard Berry from Commercial Law School and Minghua Zhao, Head of Marine Sociology ResearchTeam and other professors and experts. The next day, under the guidance by theresponsible person of the SSU laboratory, the delegation visited the university’sseven innovative practice laboratories of art production, carbon fibermaterials, testing, advanced manufacturing, robotics, intelligent control andwave sinks and understood the university’s flexible management methods insupporting the students’ practice innovation from the perspective of the experimentroom construction and management and other aspects. Subsequently, during theexchange of ideas with the director of Student Innovation and EmploymentGuidance Center, the delegation learned more about the university’s cooperationwith world-class enterprises to support student innovation andentrepreneurship, listened to the university's experience in management modeand broadened our visions in Innovation, entrepreneurship and employmentguidance work

University College Dublin (UCD) Ireland isa world-renowned research institute with more than 40 disciplines ranking firstin Ireland and one of Ireland's top universities. During his visit at the University,Wang Xiping held friendly talks with Paul Fanning, vice president of the university, and conductedin-depth discussions on teacher introduction and student training. Paul Fanningexpressed his great hope for further cooperation with SOU in related fieldscommon to both parties. Subsequently, the delegation also held three talksrespectively with Ms. Evelyn Doyle, Associate Dean of School of Sciences of UCD, Ms. MaryKelly-Quinn, Associate Professor of the School of Biology andEnvironmental Science and Mr.Aidan Prinsloo of the Office of International Strategic Cooperationrespectively and interacted with them on university-specific research featuresand cooperation point.

The three universities all have importantinternational influence in different fields. The visit of the delegation deepenedmutual understanding and played a good role in further promoting thecooperation between SOU and universities in England and Ireland and enhancingthe internationalization level of our university.
