On June 1, at the invitation of the Research Office of Polar Marine Ecosystem of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Ocean Fishery Resource Sustainable Development and the College of Marine Science, Doctor Stuart Corney from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) of the University of Tasmania (UTAS) in Australia paid a visit to SHOU, and gave a speech entitled “Using models to assess and project change in the marine ecosystem of the East Antarctic”. Also present at the event were Deputy Dean Hu Song, associate professor Zhu Guoping and some teachers and students of the College of Marine Science.

At the event, Stuart Corney summarized the development and status of marine ecosystem models,  described in detail the East Antarctica ecosystem simulation work currently conducted by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Center (ACE-CRC), and especially shared Euphausua superba-oriented ecosystem function & dynamic simulation and other work. After the event, Stuart Corney also exchanged ideas with teachers and students present regarding related technical issues, and answered questions posed by them in details.

As an expert of IMAS and ACE-CRC in ecosystem model researches, Stuart Corney enjoys high reputation in the field of Antarctic ecosystem simulation. He also serves as Co-chairman of the Integrating Climate and Ecosystem Dynamics in the Southern Ocean (ICED), a well-known institution in the field of Antarctic ecosystem research. As a project member of ACE-CRC, Doctor Corney is mainly responsible for assessing the status and trend of the habitat, key species and ecosystem of the East Antarctic of the Southern Ocean. His specific research contents cover the influence of physical habitats on ecosystems and species, especially in the context of climate change.

The exchange visit paid by Stuart Corney further deepened SHOU’s connections with ACE-CRC and IMAS, and further embodied the practical operation conducted between SHOU and ACE-CRC after the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Since the signing of the memorandum of understanding in 2015 between the two sides, SHOU has invited many scientific research fellows (including visiting fellows) of this institution through various channels for the exchange program, including well-known Euphausua superba research expert Doctor So Kawaguchi, Antarctic climate research expert professor Tony Worby, and marine biologists Doctor Keith Reid, Doctor Jia Zhongnan and Doctor Stuart Corney. Young teachers of SHOU also visited ACE-CRC for the exchange program and learning at invitation, including associate research fellow Lin Dongming, associate professor Chang Liang and postgraduate Zhang Haiting. With the continuous promotion and development of cooperation between the two sides, SHOU will invite more well-known experts of ACE-CRC for the exchange program, increase the exchange visits of our young teachers and students to Australia, thus providing an important support to our “Double World-class” construction and construction of first-class doctoral programs in marine disciplines.
