Schools and Colleges

The university consists of 8 specialized colleges, namely, College of Fisheries and Life Science, College of Marine Science, College of Food Science and Technology, College of Economics and Management, College of Information Technology, College of Humanities, College of Engineering Science and Technology, and College of Foreign Languages, as well as other 4 colleges, including College of International Cultural Exchanges, College of Continuing Education, College of Higher Technical and Vocational Education, and the joint AIEN Institute by the University and Australia. In addition, the Central Agricultural Cadres Training Center, SHOU Branch and the Ocean Fisheries Training Center of Ministry of Agriculture are also located in the university.

College of Fisheries and Life Science

Founded in 1923, the College of Fisheries and Life Science, with 87 years history, is the former Aquaculture Branch of Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School. It has 3 disciplines, namely, Aquaculture, Aquatic Biology and Marine Biology, with 7 subordinate departments. It has established the Key Open Laboratory of Aquatic Genetic Resources and Aquaculture Ecology of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Key Open Laboratory of Aquatic Genetic Resources Excavation and Utilization jointly constructed by the university, the Municipality and the Ministry of Education, the Bank of Aquatic Animals and Plants Pathogens of the Ministry of Agriculture , Fish Nutrition and Environment Research Centre, Shanghai University Program Research Centre of Water Environment and Ecology, Shanghai Aquaculture Program Technical Research Centre, National Fisheries Science Experimental Teaching Centre, Aquaculture E-Institute of Shanghai Universities, the Ichthyologic Research Lab and Specimen Lab. It also has 2 educational bases in Binhai, Pudong District and Xiangshan, Zhejiang Province, 2 school-level enterprises-universities-researches cooperative bases and 12 Practical Training Bases for undergraduate students.

The Aquaculture was appraised as the National Key Discipline as well as the Key Discipline of Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Agriculture. The college has one postdoctoral station and 2 doctoral degree programs in aquaculture and aquatic biology, 7 master degree programs and 8 bachelor degree programs.

College of Marine Science

The College of Marine Science is a distinctive and traditional college which was the former Fishing Division founded in 1912.It comprises several departments and research centers, namely, the Department of Marine Fisheries, Fishery Resources, Marine Environment, Fishery Information Engineering, Distant Water Fisheries Research Institute ,Marine Laws and Policy Research Institute, Marine Fishery Remote Sensing and Information Centre, Sino-USA Marine Remote Sensing and Information Centre, Shanghai Marine Biological Resources and Environment Innovation Platform, Distant Water Fishery Training Center affiliated to Ministry of Agriculture ,Global Marine Distress Safety System Simulation and other distinctive innovation platforms, labs and training facilities. In addition, the Squid Fishing Technique Group, Tuna Technique Group and Large-scale Trawl of Pelagic Fisheries Branch of China Fisheries Association and other national technical consulting and services institutes were set up under relevant departments accordingly.

There is one key discipline of Ministry of Agriculture, one key construction discipline of Shanghai, one key discipline of Shanghai Education Commission, one Marine Biological Resources and Environment Innovation Platform of Shanghai Education Commission and one Shanghai educational highland in this college. The college has 2 post-doctoral stations, 2 doctoral degree programs, 3 master degree programs and 6 undergraduate programs.

College of Food Science and Technology

The College of Food Science and Technology was formally the Fisheries Manufacturing Division of Wusong Fisheries. Technical School founded in 1912 and was named Department of Fisheries Processing in 1952.It was renamed Department of Food Science and Technology in 1986 and the College of Food Science and Technology was founded after that in 1993.

The college now has one Food Science and Engineering Postdoctoral Research Station, one Doctoral Program of Aquatic Products Processing and Storage, one master level subject of Food Science and Engineering, three second-level disciplines for masters in Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, two Master's programs in Food Engineering and Agricultural Popularization of Food Safety. The college now has 7 bachelor’s degree programs.

The college consists of 4 departments, including Department of Aquatic Products Processing and Storage Engineering, Department of Food Science and Engineering, Department of Refrigeration and Cryogenics Engineering, Department of Chemistry, 4 key laboratories, including Chemistry Center Laboratory, Food Engineering Laboratory, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Laboratory, 5 centers, including Food Safety Strategy Research Center, Sino-Japanese Aquatic Product Processing and Utilization Research Center, Refrigerator and Refrigeration Equipment Quality Supervision and Detection Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture, Sino-Japan Fresh Water Fish Processing and Utilization Research Center, Fuhuang Caohu Sanzhen Food Research and Development Center, Natural Drug Preparations Biological Activities Research Center and the Research Institute of Marine Bio-pharmacy.

The college has now launched academic exchanges, cooperation in science researches and talent-training programs with America, Japan, UK, Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Russia and some areas like Taiwan, etc. At the same time, the college has allied with Bright Food(Group)Co. Ltd, Pepsi Food(China)Co. Ltd, Shanghai Food Research Institute, Fuhuang Caohu Sanzhen Food Co. Ltd, aiming at building a coalition integrated with production, teaching and research. Both Shanghai Apple Flavor and Fragrance Co. Ltd and Shanghai Tyacht Refrigeration Equipment Co. Ltd have set up special scholarships for our students.

College of Economics and Management

Relying on the 3 main disciplines of the university, the college actively develops the Discipline of Economics and Management. It has now 4 research institutions, namely, Marine Economic Research Centre, Food Economic Management Research Centre, Modern Logistics Research Centre, Aquaculture Economic Research Centre and China Fisheries Development Strategy Research Center which is jointly built with the Ministry of Agriculture.

The college has 7 bachelor’s degree programs, including Agricultural Economics and Management, Finance, International Economics and Trade, Accounting, Logistics Management, Marketing, and Food Economy Management, 3 Master’s degree programs, including Industrial Economics, Fisheries Management and Agricultural Economics and Management, 1 equivalent-education master degree program of Regional Economy Development, and 1 doctoral degree program in Fisheries Economics and Management, which makes SHOU the only university covering from bachelor’s degree to doctoral degree in the field of Fisheries Economics and Management. In recently years, over 30 province or ministry-level research projects sponsored by National Science Funds and National Social Science Funds, more than 10 projects cooperative with international research institutes, and about 50 crossing research projects have been held by the staff from the college, with more than 200 essays and over 10 books being published in the core academic journals from home and abroad.

The college attaches much importance to the discipline construction. It has become a national base for cultivating talents in fisheries economics and management, an innovation centre for Fisheries Economic Theories and a consulting center for fisheries economic policy research. Agricultural Economics and Management has become a key characteristic discipline of Shanghai Municipality. In 2007, Fisheries Economic was authorized the National Classic Course, the reformation and practices in this course winning the second prize of the Shanghai Educational Achievements Award in 2009 and reputed Shanghai Teaching Team in 2010.

As well as seeking development in China, the college actively expands its foreign exchanges and spares no efforts to explore new approaches to the cooperation with foreign universities. Nowadays, it has established wide cooperative ties with the universities and research institutes from U.S.A, Japan, Norway, Korea, etc. as well as United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

College of Information Technology

Established in 1996, the college of Information Technology of Shanghai Ocean University has seven majors, namely, Computer Science and Technology, Information Management and System, Information and Computer Science, Spatial Information and Digital Technology, Basic Public Computer, Basic Public Mathematics, and Basic Public Physics. An Information Technology Experiment Center, a Basic Physics Education Center, a Digital Ocean Institute and a Digital Agriculture Engineering Center are also included in the college. The college has two master's degree programs for computer application technology, computer technology, and one agriculture promotion master's degree program in agricultural information area.

Closely relying on the advantages of the major in the marine field, the college shapes the research system by supporting it with assistant decision-making as a core method. As a result, the college has achieved a breakthrough in the digital ocean and digital fishery industry. At present, it has accomplished the projects of Constructing Shanghai Demonstration Districts sponsored by National Development and Reform Commission, namely, Capability Cultivation on Disaster Prevention and Reduction and digital Ocean respectively. Meanwhile, the college has successfully won such major science and technology project applications as the Bohai Marine Environment Information Integration and Its Dynamic Management Technique Demonstration Application sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The college has modern technical laboratory centers for teaching and research, namely, labs for software integrated teaching, the access of Internet and safety of information, decision support system on ocean information, embedded system and information processing and computer composition principle.

The college puts a lot of weight on the open policy that emphasizes on the communication with well-known companies and universities like Microsoft, Georgia Southwestern State University, Shanghai Xiukang Electronic Information and so forth, with whom pedagogic practice bases have been established. Dynamic extracurricular activities enable the students to develop themselves fully by participating in the national mathematics modeling match for college students and electronic designs matches with excellent performance.

College of Engineering Science and Technology

The college of Engineering Science and Technology was founded in 2006 by integrating 2 departments of the College of Marine Science and Technology, namely, the Department of Electromechanical Engineering and the Department of Basic Engineering. It consists of the College Office, the Office of Students Affairs, the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, the Department of Industrial Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering, and the Complex Laboratory. The college offers 4 bachelor degree programs in Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Industrial Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Automation and Logistic Engineering. The college has the qualification to grant master degree in Mechanical Design and Theory and Machinery Engineering (Master of Engineering). It has a Science and Technology Center for College Students, a Fisheries Energy-saving Research Institute and a Marine Engineering Research Center.

The college possesses strong scientific research strength, a broad research field and excellent scientific research basis. College of Foreign Languages

The College of Foreign Languages comprises four departments, namely, Department of English Language, Department of Japanese Language, Department of Korean Language, and Department of College English, one Foreign Languages Research Institute and other scientific research institutes. The college has a faculty of 88, among which, 40% enjoys high technical titles, 20% has doctoral degrees (as high as 50% in some departments). 85% of the teachers has overseas experiences.

Students can watch NHK, BBC, KBS and other famous international TV programs through professional language labs and multi-functional labs which are equipped with advanced digital language learning system and satellite reception machines. The college has also set up particular language training rooms which provide the students with real Japanese and Korean living conditions.

The College of Foreign Languages has a long history. The Department of English has cultivated 20 cohorts of students ever since its first enrolment in 1989 and has received widespread recognition from the public. Similarly, the Department of Japanese began its enrolment in 1991. And in 2007, the Department of Korean started its operation.

The college, actively carrying out international academic exchanges and cooperations, has established a cooperative relationship with universities of several countries and regions. The “2+2” mode cooperative educational program with Kyushu Women’s University, Kyushu Kyoritsu University , Kwassui Women’s college, etc has cultivated more than 150 students. It has also been working on the tuition-free cooperative program with Korean Sookmyung Women’s University and Sangmyung University. The first 15 exchange students have begun their overseas career in Korea. The college has already signed several cooperation agreements with several well-known universities in the USA.

College of Humanities

The College of Humanities consists of 1 department, 1 institute and 2 divisions, namely, Department of Administration, Public Administration Research Institute, Division of Physical Education and Division of Literature and Arts. The college undertakes the teaching task of such three basic courses as political theories, physical education and literature &arts of the whole university.

The college, which enrolls over 500 undergraduate students, has bachelor degree programs of Administration, Administration (Labor and Social Security) and Social Work. The college has 2 key courses of Shanghai Municipality, 5 key courses of the university, and 6 key courses of the college. It takes an active part in the Construction of 085 Educational Quality Program supported by Shanghai Education Commission and focuses mainly on the construction of the courses, textbooks and the cultivation of young teachers. The college has a faculty of 53, among which 33% have senior professional and technical titles and 46 are full-time teachers. There is a strong academic atmosphere and in recent years, 200 academic research papers, 40 monographs and textbooks have been published. More than 10 programs (including the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation Program, National Soft Science Program and some provincial and ministerial programs) and other 50 research programs are hosted. The college also wins more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards for its research outputs.

The college actively expands its foreign exchanges aiming at exploring a new way of joint education. It has now launched lots of educational cooperative programs and exchange activities with countries such as Japan, Korea, Russia, etc.

AIEN Institute

Based on the principal of complementary cooperation and mutual development, AIEN Institute, was jointly built by Shanghai Ocean University and University of Tasmania, Australia in 2002. The Institute now has two disciplines which were authorized by Shanghai Education Commission in 2002 and 2003: bachelor degree program of Information Management and Information Systems and bachelor degree program of Marketing. In January 2008, the two cooperative programs were one of the very first programs approved by the Ministry of Education through a double check system. It adopts the cultivation mode of “4+0”and is included in the national undergraduate enrollment plan. The institute has enrolled 8 cohorts of students, a total of 1,600 in number, 5 of which have already graduated.

The institute attaches importance to the introduction of first-rate educational resources from abroad and adopts international teaching modes. 70% basic and specialized courses are offered in English with original Australian teaching materials and syllabus. After graduation, the students can be awarded bachelor degree and graduation certificate from Shanghai Ocean University, as well as bachelor degree from the University of Tasmania.

College of International Cultural Exchanges

The College of International Cultural Exchanges (short for“International College”)is a special institute for Sino-foreign cultural exchange students. Taking advantage of an integrated system of disciplines and distinctive features of the university, the college focuses on aquaculture, marine science, food, fishery economics and fishery management, etc. and has established a complete educational system which covers graduates, postgraduates, doctors, and post doctors. The college adopts flexible teaching modes though which students can study either in other colleges of the university or in particularly arranged classes, as such it can meet the needs of foreign students of different levels who want to receive formal education for diplomas, non-formal education and training in Chinese, etc. The university has established a good relationship in academic exchanges and cooperation with more than 40 colleges, universities and research institutes in the U.S.A, Japan, Australia, Russia, Korea, and Vietnam, etc. and was awarded “Friendship Medal” by Tran DucLuong, President of Vietnam in 2002 for the great achievements made in training Vietnamese students. Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Science was formally the Political Teaching and Research Group founded in 1952. In March 1984, the Marxism-Leninism Teaching and Research Section and Moral Education Teaching and Research Section were founded. Later in October 1988, the Department of Social Science was founded. During the years from 1992 to 1994, the Moral education Section was merged into the Department of Social Science. In October 1997, the Department of Social Science and the Moral Education Section were merged into the College of Humanities as what we may know now-the Department of Social Science. On December 31st, 2008, the Department of Social Science separated from the College of Humanities as an autonomous department.

It takes charge in the construction of the Discipline of Marxism and the teaching mission of Ideological and Political Courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department has a teaching staff of more than 20 teachers (9 doctors and 9 associate professors), with subordinates of Teaching and Research Section for Sinolization of Marxism and Moral Education Teaching and Research Section.

The College of Continuing Education was established in 1994 with supports from SHOU and extramural teaching faculty. The advanced teaching facilities and strict management attract students from all over China, which expands the educational scale of the college. It offers diploma education, including 15 undergraduate programs, 30 vocational training programs and 17 top-up programs(undergraduate programs promoted from vocational training programs), concerning Economics, Management, Electronic Information Engineering, Computer Science, Tourism, Food, Language and Environment, etc. Non-diploma education is also offered which includes cadres' seminars in aquatic system, certificates-oriented training courses opened by the college and extramural institutes, technical certificates courses and other short-term training courses.
