On the morning of March 3, the Launching & Naming Ceremony of SHOU's Pelagic Fishery ResourcesResearch Vessel was successfully held in Tianjin. Present at the ceremony towitness this great moment were leaders and representatives from Ministry of Agriculture Bureau of Fishing Vessel, State Oceanic Administration Departmentof Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, NationalFishery Technical Extension Center (NFTEC), China Fisheries Association,Tianjin Xin' gang Shipyard, Tianjin Aquatic Product Group Co., Ltd., relatedinstitutes and higher education institutions and so forth, as well as theretired leaders of SHOU and the alumni representatives in Tianjin.

"Songhang" enjoying in the morning light

Wu Jiamin, Secretary ofSHOU CPC Committee, announced that the research vessel was officially named as "Songhang" after the "Songhang" training ship of SHOU built more than 100 years ago. The training ship was destroyed by the Japanese army in the "1.28" SonghuAnti-Japanese Battle in the 21st year of the Republic of China. Thenew "Songhang" not only carries a rich history, but also contains marinetalents' soaring ambitions of developing marine science and technology, servingthe industry and contributing to the country. As the first pelagic fisheryresources research vessel in China, it consolidates the marine dream that all Chinese share, and will provide an important scientific and technologicalresearch platform for our national pelagic fishing industry.

Cheng Yudong, SHOU President, unveiled and signed the nameplateof the research vessel. As pointed out by President Cheng in his speech, thepelagic fishery resources research vessel is a multipurpose leading shipintegrating pelagic fishery resources research and marine scientificinvestigation, and it will provide strong support for both the in-depth patterntransformation of SHOU towards a new-type ocean university and the successfulimplementation of our "13th Five-year Plan". Under the guidance ofour national marine development strategy, the completion and use of "Songhang" will no doubt contribute to the transformation of our country from a pelagicfishery power to a pelagic fishery giant, and write a new chapter in theconstruction of a modern powerful fishery nation.

Jointlyinvested and built by the Ministry of Agriculture and Shanghai MunicipalGovernment, "Songhang" is the first multipurpose marine research &scientific investigation vessel completed by a university based in Shanghai. Itis currently equipped with the most advanced fishing equipment in the world anda set of advanced scientific investigation system equipment and laboratoryinvested in the amount of 80 million RMB; it supports trawling, tuna long-line,lighted squid jigging and other modes of fishing operations as well asmeteorological, hydrological, biological and other scientific investigationfunctions. Fully capable of adapting to various investigations based on thebiological features of different fishery resources, it can be used forhydrology, benthos, plankton, marine meteorology, marine atmosphere monitoringand other investigation and sampling purposes, and can provide basic guaranteefor researches on different fishing gears and fishing methods. There are 26sections constituting different functional areas, and each section has itsunique functions; the specific functional areas involved include powergenerator set, straight blae propulsion system, fishing operation area, scientific investigation laboratory, driver’s cab, crew space, canteen and soforth. After delivery, it will serve the major marine research & scientificinvestigation programs at both national and Shanghai local levels as animportant marine scientific research platform for the higher educationinstitutions in Shanghai. Its completion will also provide a strong guaranteefor our pelagic fishery resources research and marine scientific investigationcause, equip necessary hardware facilities for the cultivation of pelagicfishery talents and play an irreplaceable role in facilitating ourtransformation from a pelagic fishery power to a pelagic fishery giant and instrengthening our international fishery contractual capacity.

Since May 14 ,2013, theday on which the proposal for the research vessel program was approved byNational Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the vessel building has gonethrough nearly four years. As a multipurpose leading ship integrating pelagicfishery resources research and marine scientific investigation, it has posedmany new design and building problems to the design unit and the shipyard. BothCSIC Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. and SHOU fieldsupervision team have fully brought their "craftsmanship" into play, and paidthe closest attention to even the tiniest weld joint. In particular, after thejoining of vessel body and deck at section 102, it's even more difficult tocrawl into the bilge via the manhole to inspect welding quality, but the mostcareful inspection has always been conducted under every circumstance.

The launching of "Songhang" research vessel marks the successful completion of the major worksof the most advanced fishery resources research vessel in domestic. Thelaunched vessel is about to enter its equipment installation & debuggingand internal decoration phase. According to the preliminary plan, it will beaccepted and delivered in July, and set on its maiden trip in September orOctober.

Tang Jinlong, ChiefEngineer of the Ministry of Agriculture Bureau of Fishing Vessel, attended theceremony and delivered a speech. Hu Xiang, General Manager of Tianjin Xin' gangShipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., gave his welcome speech, and unveiledand signed the commemorative plaque.
