On the afternoon of May 24, SHOU held its hadal science development plan demonstration meeting in Multimedia Information Center Room102. Jin Zhenmin, Jiao Nianzhi and Yang Shufeng, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Li Jiabiao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Professor Huang Junhua from the China University of Geosciences(Wuhan) and other experts; Wu Jiamin, Secretary of SHOU CPC Committee; Cheng Yudong, President of SHOU; Li Jiale, Vice President of SHOU; heads of related departments; some members of the academic committee; head of HAST; members of the hadal science team, and so forth. The meeting was chaired by Li Jiale, Vice President of SHOU.
As pointed out by Cheng in his speech, to accomplish one of the major tasks in the development of oceanology education, SHOU has actively docked with China's Strategy of Maritime Power, and energetically expanded its scientific researches in the fields of “deep and high seas marine engineering equipment” and “deep sea science”. In the future, SHOU’s hadal science team will rely on its “hadal scientific and technological mobile laboratory”, adhere to the four-in-one development idea (i.e., “subject, talent, research, and society”, take hadal geology, hadal biology, hadal chemistry, and hadal biobank as major research fields, and focus on exploring ten major hadal sciences, with the aim of building the most competitive and characteristic ocean subjects with the highest international influence.
The academicians and experts present highly agreed with SHOU’S strategy to expand the research directions of marine hadal science on the basis of marine engineering technology and to actively explore the system and mechanism innovation of research. They claimed that hadal science would be a feature and breakthrough for Shanghai in building a national marine center, and also be one aspect of the construction of a scientific innovation center by Shanghai.
In addition, the experts suggested that the research directions should be narrowed down according to current national demands and promising scientific problems, and they also put forward their advices about laboratory construction, talent team building, international exchange, and talent cultivation.
In the speech given at the end, Wu briefly introduced the construction status of the oceanology education of the university after being renamed as SHOU, and talked about the exploration and practice of its “three innovations” and “three combinations” in the development of its hadal science and technology. Wu also appreciated the experts for their precious and constructive advice, and expressed the hope that they would provide further guidance to SHOU regarding its development, especially in its academic construction.
