At the invitation of the College of Marine Science, the Research Office of Polar Marine Ecosystem of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Ocean Fishery Resources Sustainable Development, and Sino-Australian Marine Cooperation and Research Center, Doctor So Kawaguchi, marine ecologist of Australian Antarctic Division and Doctoral Supervisor of SHOU, visited our university on April 7-13, 2019, gave advanced lectures to our graduate students, and took part in undergraduate teaching. This is the fifth consecutive year that he gives lectures to students of SHOU.

So Kawaguchi offered a comprehensive and systematic account to the graduate students of SHOU about the biology, ecology and experimental biology of Euphausua superba, the influence of climate change on Euphausua superba, the fishery and operations of krill, the research on Australian krill, the research on Euphausua superba, the international cooperation in this field, etc. After that, he also presented a detailed report about the Antarctic scientific investigation just completed by Australia. Taking the opportunity of giving advanced lectures to our graduate students, he also took part in the teaching of our undergraduate courses, including Polar Biology and Oceanography and Polar Biology. Upon learning that the Department of Japanese offers the course Introduction to Marine Science, he actively offered to give a lecture entitled “Antarctic scientific investigation” to the students of the department to broaden their vision.
This series of advanced lectures and lessons, on the one hand, widened the international vision of our students and enhanced the foundation of our research on Euphausua superba; on the other hand, they strengthened our cooperation with Australian Antarctic Division in the field of krill research, thus offering a platform for SHOU to further its research on polar marine biology and ecology.
