Climate change is a major global challenge today. In this context, tackling climate change is an international consensus, but also a historical opportunity for China to effectively practice the concept of “a community with a shared future for mankind” and actively participate in global governance. To better implement the national strategy of “carbon dioxide peaking and carbon neutrality”, respond to climate change, and ensure the source power of sustainable development and to vigorously promote marine ecological restoration, marine ranching construction, and other strategies for the sake of negative marine emissions, SHOU, together with units such as the Key Laboratory of Marine Ecological Monitoring and Restoration Technologies under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Jiangsu Ocean University, Shanghai Society of Oceanology and Limnology, and the Division of Ocean Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, CSBMB, held the “Third International Symposium on Seaweed, Marine Ranch, and Carbon Sink” online on November 12. Experts, scholars, and graduate students from countries such as China, Australia, and South Korea, as well as regions such as Hong Kong of China, attended the symposium online. Jiang Min, Vice President of SHOU, delivered a speech on behalf of the sponsor. The symposium was presided over by Professor He Peimin of SHOU.

Renowned figures in the field were also specially invited for academic exchanges, including Professor Yan Xiaojun, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang Ocean University; Professor He Jianzong, founder of the Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong Limited; Professor Jang Kyun Kim of Incheon National University, South Korea; Dr. Jonathan Yu Sing Leung of the University of Adelaide, Australia; Professor Wu Zegeng of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Associate Professor Wu Hailong of Jiangsu Ocean University; and Research Associate Ren Chenggang of the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Associate Professor Zhang Jianheng and Dr. Li Xunmeng of SHOU delivered academic reports on behalf of SHOU. The attendees exchanged ideas on topics such as large-scale seaweed ecological restoration, marine ranching, and seaweed carbon sink, discussed relevant hot-spots, difficulties, and key issues, and shared the latest research results, which received unanimous praises from the attendees.
The symposium created a great opportunity for participating experts and scholars to engage in in-depth discussions on the scientific principles, process mechanisms, and related implementation technologies and plans of marine ecological restoration and ocean carbon sink. The results of the symposium will further contribute to the achievement of China’s “double-carbon” goal.
